Climate-friendly production

From Lean to Green to

Mission Blue

The fact that Schubert emerged as the overall winner of the T&O Group’s Lean & Green Management Award in 2025 has given us a huge boost in motivation. It demonstrates that our Mission Blue Sustainability Initiative is making a real impact deep within the Schubert team, where it has been embraced by committed employees.

Now we have it in black and white. The approach of closely linking lean methods with environmental impact is bringing us closer, step by step, to climate-friendly production. For Schubert, the move from Lean to Green is entirely logical. The more efficiently we use materials and energy, the less strain we place on the environment and the climate. At Schubert, responsibility for all things green lie with Max Wagner, Head of Facilities Management, and Jonas Schmidt, Project Engineer for Energy, Environment and Sustainability. They are using strategic, scientifically sound methods to systematically reduce our environmental impact.

Ambassadors for built facilities

The greatest potential for improving efficiency and reducing emissions reductions lies in our products and production processes. With this in mind, creating a network of 22 dedicated ambassadors who look after specific areas of the facilities and are on site every day makes perfect sense. After all, our employees are best placed to identify where we can operate more sustainably – such as spotting where compressed air is leaking unchecked in the production halls, identifying plastic bags in production that need replacing, or working out the best way to recycle toner cartridges. “This allows us to make targeted improvements to our ISO-certified energy and environmental management systems,” says Jonas Schmidt. “Our network of ambassadors provides exactly the structure and momentum we need.”

>> Getting involved couldn’t be easier: Peter Schubert, Head of Design and member of the third generation of Schubert family, has also taken on an ambassadorship.

Overarching goal: reducing emissions

Every insight and idea from our staff helps us achieve our ultimate goal: reducing Gerhard Schubert GmbH’s Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42 per cent between the base year of 2021 and 2030. Max Wagner and Jonas Schmidt have developed an impressive dashboard to identify and systematically implement these measures based on scientific data. At its core are 11 precisely defined energy and environmental targets, including a 20 per cent reduction in electricity consumption by the end of 2028 compared with 2023. A list of over 60 measures outlines current work in progress, with all relevant measurements and figures continuously collated here. The dashboard serves as a central management and comprehensive tracking tool that maps out every development in detail – whether positive or negative.

Decarbonisation versus revenue growth

The dashboard helps us evaluate our decarbonisation efforts based on facts and assess their effectiveness objectively. After all – as many manufacturing companies know – total emissions are always linked to revenue. The better the financial year goes, the more difficult it becomes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the same time. That’s why Schubert keeps an eye on both smaller-scale measures and the overall trend across multiple years. One thing we were able to establish in 2025:

>> Over the last five years, Gerhard Schubert GmbH has reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by more than a third, while total output increased by 32 per cent over the same period.
